The first 12 Piranha 5 armored carriers will get to Craiova today

The first lot of 12 Piranha 5 wheeled armored personnel carrier will leave, today, the Bucharest Mechanical Factory and get to Craiova, announced the company that produced them.

The Ministry of National Defence and GDELS company are organizing also a press event today, starting with 18pm, at the Bucharest Mechanical Factory, when the carriers will be loaded on trailers.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Land Forces, general-major Iulian Berdila, will also attend the event.

The first 36 Piranha 5 wheeled armored personnel carriers were received at the beginning of the month and will not get to the final beneficiaries, Red Scorpions from Craiova, after successfully passing through the qualitative reception phase at the Bucharest Mechanical Factory.

The carriers were received with a two-year delay, and the minister of defence, Nicolae Ciuca, was stating that the following carriers will be delivered sooner: “I am confident that the following set of Piranha 5 carriers will be delivered to the military in less than a year and things will get back on track”.

Nicolae Ciuca seemed pleased with the fact that, from now on, the other carriers will be produced in Romania and their maintenance will also be done in the country: “The military will get the so-needed Piranha 5 armored carriers and the Bucharest Mechanical Factory will develop a lot becoming one of the defence production facilities to have a strategic interest for our national security”.

Romania bought 227 Piranha 5 carriers and 197 of them should be assembled in Romania, at the Bucharest Mechanical Factory, for almost 900 million euro.

The contract was signed at the beginning of 2018 and, at the beginning of 2019, the first 36 products should be delivered.

According to information obtained by the Defence and Security Monitor from the MoND, the military institution has only signed the fist contract, related to 94 of the vehicles, and offered an advance payment worth of 111 million euro.
