Possible huge air-maritime drill in the Black Sea
Sorin ButiriGiven that on August 4th the Russian Federation dislocated an A-50U aircraft at the Saki air base in Crimea, it is likely for us to witness, in the following period, an important flight activity of the Black Sea’s Russian Fleet aviation (with remote striking possibilities of European objectives) or of the Aircosmic Forces of the Russian Federation (strategic bombers). We also think this complex exercise may take place during the night.
On August 5th, the Russian air forces dislocated in the Crimea Peninsula have used an Su-27 hunting aicrcraft to intercept two US research aicrafts over the Black Sea. We are talking about a RC-135 strategic research aircraft of the US Air Forces and a P-8A Poseidon submarine patrol aircraft of the US Naval Forces.
The strategic Boeing R-135W River Joint aircraft has took off from the Air Base Mildenholl from Great Britain.
Most likely, the flight of the two US military aircrafts may have intended to verity the information related to the dislocation on the Saki airport of the A-50U aircraft and to monitor the land, maritime and air exercises which currently take place in the Southern Military Region, at a high „tempo”, before the strategic command and general staff drill „Caucasus 2020”, to take place betwwen 21 and 26th of September.
Force maneuvers and methods
On August 4th, an A-50U aircraft (similar to AWACS/NATO), belonging to the Aircosmic Forces of the Russian Federation was redislocated from the Air Base Ivanovo to the Saki airport from Crimea.
Normally, the temporary dislocation in the Crimean Peninsula of an A-50U aircraft is follwed by important flight activities of the Black Sea’s Russian Fleet aviation or of the Aircosmic Forces of the Russian Federation (strategic bombers).
Tests and exercises
On august 4th, a Russian IL-114LL aircraft executed a test flight close to Crimea’s West coast and, at the same time, a British RAF Sentinel R1 reseach aircraft was executing an ISR mission (intelligence, surveillance, reccoinnaisance) in the same area.
The IL-114LL aircraft is a modified and modernized version of the IL-114 aircraft projected for flight tests for the air echipments, radar systems and the termic photograhy and cartography equipment of land and maritime surfaces.
