Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 85.000 people got vaccinated (more than 52.000 with both doses). Totally, more than 3.4 million got vaccinated, with 2 million getting both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 1.233 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 94 deaths and in ICU there are now 1.190 people hospitalized.
  • The Government has presented the vaccination situation for people getting at least 1 dose: Bucharest 31.2%, Cluj 28.0% and Timis 22.5% have the first three positions. On the last positions we find Giurgiu 10.5%, Botosani 10.4% and Suceava 10.0%.
  • Less and less teachers get vaccinated. The vaccination rhythm among professors has decreased a lot, getting from a few thousands per day to 200-300, says the Education Minister, Sorin Cimpeanu, according to Mediafax.

Global political and military events

  • Benjammin Netanyahu could not create a governmental coalition in Israel. The effective prime-minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, formally informed president Reuven Rivlin, on Tuesday evening, that he could not establish a government coalition, says Mediafax. The president will initiate, on Wednesday, new consultations with the parliamentary parties and if a coalition is not established, then Israel might organize parliamentary elections again.
  • Israel attacked the Syrian port Latakia, where there is a Russian military base. The Syrian military said that Israeli airplanes have attacked, last evening, military targets in Latakia and Hifa and Misyaf villages. In Latakia there is also a Russian military base.
  • The guests’ day at the Defender Europe military drill. Tuesday was the guests’ day at the Defender Europe 2021 military drill, in Albania, with the participation of the US general Tod Wolters, the supreme commander of the Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).
  • The talibans have launched a massive military offensive. On Tuesday, the Taliban militants have launched a series of offensives on the afghan territory, says AP. They think the foreign troops should have been withdrawn on first of May, as foreseen in the agreement signed with the Trump Administration.
  • Donald Trump wants another mandate. The former president Donald Trump has suggested, on Tuesday, that he would run again for president in 2024, saying he will make the announcement “at the right time”, says The Hill.
  • Egypt and Turkey start two days of negotiations. Egypt and Turkey will organize on Wednesday and Tuesday two days of political consultations in Cairo, a part of some improvement efforts for the bilateral relations the two regional rivals have, says AFP. Turkey’s involvement in the Libyan war and the maritime borders in Eastern Mediterranean will also be included in meeting’s agenda.
  • Putin and Biden might meet in June. The US president Joe Biden has stated on Tuesday evening that he hopes he will meet the his Russia counterpart Vladimir Putin during his tour in Europe, in June, says AP. The US president is about to make his first official visits in June, in Great Britain and Belgium, for the G7 and NATO summits and also to meet with EU leaders, says Agerpress.

Romania’s defence and security

  • The Dacia 21 military drills, connected to Defender Europe, have started. More than 10.000 Romanian soldiers and 5.000 others form 17 allied and partner nations will participate at this drill, in 16 training fields.
  • The Senate has adopted the amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code. The Senate has adopted, on Tuesday, the project by which the court will have a maximum of 120 days to give a sentence and publish its reason, says Digi24.
