Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 54.000 people got vaccinated (more than 34.000 with both doses). Totally, more than 4.1 million people got the vaccine, with more than 3.2 getting both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 230 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 36deaths and in ICU there are now 580 people hospitalized.

Global political and military events

  • The EU is imposing new sanctions on Belarus. On Monday evening, the chiefs of state and government from the EU have asked for the imposition of new sanctions against entities and individuals in Belarus. The airplanes of Belarus companies will not be allowed to fly in the EU’s air space and will not have access to EU’s airports. Also, the EU’s airplane companies will avoid flying over Belarus.
  • Belarus and Latvia have mutually expelled the diplomatic representatives. The entire personnel from the Minsk and Riga embassies have to leave the country until next week. The Minsk authorities have started such actions after a hockey game in Riga, wherein it was displayed the flag of the Belarus opposition, as a solidarity sign for the detainment of Roman Protasevich, and Latvia answered with similar actions. Another reason would be that the Riga city hall took off the official flag of Belarus which was in front of the building and has displayed the flag used by the Minsk opposition during the anti-Lukashenka protests.
  • The Mali military detained the president, prime-minister and defence minister. The military junta is angered that two members were removed from the government. President Bah Ndaw, prime-minister Moctar Ouane and the defence minister Souleymane Doucoure were taken to a military base in Kati, close to Bamako capital. A coup d’état from August 2020 overthrew president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita from his position.
  • Mossad has a new chief. David Barnea, 56 years old, will replace the current Mossad chief, Joseph (Yossi) Cohen, starting next month, says Mediafax. David Barnea, the until-now deputy director is specialized in recruiting agents against Iran and Hezbollah movement.
  • Australia will close its Afghanistan embassy. Prime-minister Scott Morrison has announced, on Tuesday, that Australia will close its Kabul Embassy in three days, along with the last soldiers’ withdrawal. According to a press release, the decision was taken based on security uncertainties after the complete withdrawal of foreign soldiers.

Romania’s defence and security

  • The opposition criticized the NRRP. PSD has criticized the NRRP stating that it is a “set of incoherent documents”, with not connections in between and with no coverage on the entire topic, said the PSD spokesperson, Radu Oprea.
  • A new State Secretary at the Minister of Health. Andra-Diana Migiu was appointed State Secretary at the Minister of Health through a decision of prime-minister Florin Citu. Migiu is authorized as a financial auditor and he was previously investment manager at the European Investment Bank from Luxemburg.
