Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 104.000 people got vaccinated (more than 66.000 with both doses). Totally, more than 3.7 million people got the vaccine, with more than 2.5 million people getting both doses).
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 930 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 98 deaths and in ICU are now 874 people.

Global political and military events

  • Israel-Gaza conflict. Israel responded with huge air strikes to the missile attacks of HAMAS militants, killing 67 people, among them 10 kids, says CNN.
  • The UN is warning: The conflict between Israel and Hamas can turn into a total war. Tor Wennesland, a special US coordinator for peace processes in the Middle East has warned, on Wednesday, that hostilities can turn into a ”total war”, says Mediafax.
  • The US is sending an envoy to Israel. The Joseph Biden Administration has announced, on Wednesday, the decision to send a high-rank official to the Middle East to start the negotiations between the Islamic groups from the Gaza Strip and get to a truce, says AP.
  • The inter-ethnic confrontations from Israel. There have been reported violent actions between Arab and Jewish ethnics on Wednesday evening in the Israeli cities Acra, Lod, Haifa and Bat Yam, due to the conflict between the Israeli armed forces and the HAMAS and the Islamic Jihadist groups, says Mediafax. The Israeli police have announced that they have arrested at least 374 people who participated at the violent interethnic conflicts in Israel.
  • Italy has a woman for the position of Secrete Services chief. Prime-minister Mario Draghi appointed, on Wednesday, a new chief of Secrete Services, the diplomat Elisabetta Belloni, the first woman to get this position in Italy, says Mediafax.

Romania’s defence and security

  • MFA: High security alert rose due to the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday evening that he reassessed and raised the alert level for Israel and Palestine due to the security situation deterioration and he recommends Romanians to avoid unessential trips. More than 350 people with Romanian citizenship or double citizenship live in the Gaza Strip, said Bogdan Aurescu.
  • Romania will host the conference of the EU’s Foreign Affairs ministers. Bogdan Aurescu is co-hosting, on Thursday, together with the Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, the informal videoconference of the EU’s ministers of Foreign Affairs, having guests such are the counterparts of Albania, Olta Xhacka, or North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani.
  • Investigation after Arad policemen were accused of beating a woman. The County’s Police Inspectorate in Arad announced that is doing an investigation after on social media were shared images with a woman being taken by the doctors after and witnesses accusing the she was beaten, on the street, by policemen for not wearing a mask.
