Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 60.000 people got vaccinated (more than 37.000 with both doses). Totally, more than 4.3 million people got the vaccine, with more than 3.6 getting both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 196 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 84 deaths and in ICU there are now 365 people hospitalized.

Global political and military events

  • US-Taiwan trade agreement. The United States will soon start to discuss about a trade agreement with Taiwan, said the chief of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, according to Agerpress, something that will put even more pressure on the relation with China, which claims Taipei is one of its provinces.
  • EU-Russia discussions. The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, has discussed, on Monday, with Vladimir Putin, to whom he said Russia “should end its destructive behavior” if it wants better relations with the European Union, says Digi24. The EU and Russia are disagreeing on the human rights, Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and Moscow’s treatment of the Kremlin’s critic who is now jailed, Aleksei Navalny.
  • The US has recovered a part of the ransomware paid by hackers to Colonial Pipeline. The US authorities have announced on Monday that it has recovered 2.3 million dollars from the ransomware paid to some hackers by the Colonial Pipeline company after a cyber attack which suspended all its activity, says Agerpress.
  • The US has withdrawn half of the soldiers it has in Afghanistan. The Pentagon announced that it has withdrawn half of the 2.500 soldiers dislocated in Afghanistan. This week, the Middle East Command commander, general Frank McKenzie, will present the Defence Secretary, Lloyd Austin, option to secure the US embassy from Kabul, after soldiers’ complete withdrawal.

Romania’s defence and security

  • The visit of Israel’s president to Bucharest. Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, is meeting president Klaus Iohannis, today, at Cotroceni Palace, according to a press release of the Presidential Office. In the afternoon, the Israeli official will go to Victoria Palace to meet prime-minister Florin Citu. On June 111th Romania and Israel will celebrate 73 years of diplomatic relations.
  • The Constitutional Court will have a decision on alert condition installation. The Constitutional Court will have a decision, on Tuesday, on the alert condition, through the Law no.55/2020, says Digi24.
