Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: Around 836.000 people got vaccinated (more than 601.000 with both doses). In the last 24 hours, more than 29.000 people got vaccinated (around 12.000 with both doses).
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 3.382 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 119 deaths and in ICU there are 978 people hospitalized.
  • The third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania. The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing. Yesterday, there were almost 3.400 new cases, the biggest number of positive tests recorded in the last five weeks. The doctors are talking already about the third wave of this pandemic, especially that the British variant is being spread in the entire country, says Mediafax. „If the current measures are followed and vaccination is being accelerated, then the number of cases will be controlled”, says Adriana Pistol, the director of the National Institute for Public Health.
  • The vaccination campaign of the education system employees is starting. The vaccination campaign of professors will start on February 24th in the centers which are especially arranged for them and the scheduling will be made separately than the rest of the people, says Mediafax. „The scheduling will be differently made, not on the online platform. Basically, the schools will create a list with their own employees who want to get the vaccine. These lists are sent to counties’ schools inspectorates and then to the public health institutes”, said Valeriu Gheorghita, the coordinator of the vaccination campaign. It will last until March 10th and there will be around 60.000 people vaccinated.

Global political and military events

  • Fire at a refugee’s camp in Greece, one kid died. A fire burst at a refugees’ camp in Thiva, on Tuesday night, 54 km North from Athena and a kid was found dead by the firemen, says AP. This is the third fire in one week.
  • Israel is offering vaccines to countries which are moving their embassies to Jerusalem. Prime-minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that he will send vaccine doses to countries who „got close to Israel”, says Digi  24. He did not say which are those countries, but, according to information in the media, he was talking about countries which will move their embassies to Jerusalem.
  • Great Britain is giving up one third of its tanks and is upgrading the rest of them with 1.2 billion pounds. Great Britain could give up up to 50 tanks out of the 200 Challenger 2, says the project on het Defense Strategy Review, according to Mail One. The rest of 150 tanks will be upgraded with 1.2 billion pounds to be prepared for the war of the future.
  • The plans of the spy aircraft made by Bombardier got on the dark web. The plans of the military aircraft produced by the Bombardier company got on the dark web website called CLOP LEAKS, said Daily Mail, as the company refused to pay for a ramsom tax. The Canadian company has announced, on Tuesday, that it suffered a minor cyber attack. Among the published data there are also included technical features of the GlobalEye surveillance and early warning aircraft developed by the Swedish company Saab based on the Global 6.000 aircraft from Bombardier.
  • Germany is extending the mission in Afghanistan. The German government will pass, today, the extension of its military mission in Afghanistan for January 31st 2022, said the Minister of Defence, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, in a statement, according to Daily Mail. The mission of the 1.300 troops from Afghanistan expires at the end of March.

Romania’s defence and security.

  • A MiG-21 LanceR aircraft was involved in an incident. A MiG-21 LancerR from the 71st Air Base from Campia Turzii was involved, on Tuesday, February 23th, around 6.30 pm, at the end of a training flight, in an incident that left no huge damages. The incident was provoked by the bad of the landing gear. The crew was not injured and the aircraft did not record major damages.
  • The Poseidon 21 military drill is about to start. More than 700 military from six NATO countries will train in the Black Sea, under the Romanian Naval Forces’ command, in the Poseidon 21 drill, that will start on Friday.
