Coronavirus and vaccines

  • The United States has exceeded half million deaths provoked by COVID-19. The US will hold a five days national mourning and the flags will be lowered to mark the fact that 500.000 Americans have died due to COVID-19, has announced, on Monday, the White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
  • The vaccination in Romania: Around 820.000 Romanians got vaccinated (almost 600.000 with both doses). In the last 24 hours, almost 30.000 people got vaccinated (13.515 with both doses).
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 1.634 new coronavirus cases, 47 deaths and in ICU there are now 972 people hospitalized.

Global military and political events

  • The EU is imposing sanctions on the military regime from Myanmar. The EU has decided, on Monday, to sanction the members of the military regime in Myanmar, given the coup d’état that took place on February 1st. Jose Borrell: “The Foreign Ministers have decided to impose sanctions on the economic and financial interests of the military”, says Mediafax. The Myanmar army took over the power on February 1st after arresting the prime-minister Aung San Suu Kyi and president Win Myint.
  • Canada wants to move the Winter Olympic Games from Beijing. The Canadians deputies have passed, on Monday, a motion on China’s genocide over the Uighur minority asking the government led by Justin Trudeau to do the same, says AFP, according to Agerpress. Also, they have passed a motion asking for the relocation of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games from Beijing if the genocide continues.
  • The US embassy in Iraq was attacked by missiles. The United States embassy in Bagdad was targeted on Monday by missiles, says AP. It is the third attack in one week that targets Americans from Iraq, after the attack on two military bases, where a military and a contractor were injured.

Romania’s defence and security

  • The government has approved the 2021 budget. The Law on the state budget on 2021 was adopted in the Monday evening Government meeting and will, most likely, be sent to the Parliament on Tuesday. On Monday, the 2021 State Budget passed the Legislative Council, yet with some proposals.
  • Romania will get gases from the Black Sea this year. The first Romanian gas mole from the Black Sea will be extracted by the Black Sea Oil&Gas company from the Aurora perimeter, and in 2021 also from the Neptune Deep field, said, on Monday evening, the Minister of Energy, Virgil Popescu, according to Agerpress. He also said that “we will get from the Black Sea more than we can actually use”.
