Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 55.000 people got vaccinated (more than 30.000 with both doses). The total number of people who got the vaccine is 2.1 million, more than 1.2 million with both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 5.047 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 175 deaths and in ICU there are now 1.487 people hospitalized.
  • Thromboses will be included on the list of side-effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine, said the European Medicine Agency. The EMA did a study on 86 vein thrombosis, 18 of them leading to death, and the conclusion is that one of the possible causes of the blood clots is an immune response similar to the one that emerges after getting clotting medicines, says Mediafax.
  • Valeriu Gheorghită does not recommend combining serums. The coordinator of the national vaccination campaign, Valeriu Gheorghita, has stated on Wednesday that he does not recommend the combination of two or more vaccines, referring to the fact that there are some people who got the first Astra Zeneca dose and want to get a different vaccine for their second dose.

Global political and military events

  • China-Iran agreement. The two countries have signed, on Wednesday, a cooperation and investment agreement for 25 years, says CNN.
  • Myanmar’s ambassador to London, locked out of the embassy. The ambassador’s deputy took over the control in behalf of the military, says Mediafax.
  • Turkish pilot, dead after a plan crash. Captain Burak Genccelebi was part of the stunting team of the Turkish Air Forces, Turkish Stars.
  • Iran managed to produce 55 kilograms of enriched uranium to 20%. This is an important stept in getting enriched uranium to 90%, to be then used for military purposes like creating an atomic bomb, says Mediafax.
  • Israel is opposing a nuclear agreement with Iran. Benjamin Netanyahu has stated, on Wednesday, that Israel will go againt any agreement that could allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, while there are talks in Vienna between Tehran and the international community to try to save the 2015 agreement on the Iranian nuclear progran, says Agerpress.
  • The talibans have attacked the Kandahar airfield, where there are also Romanian soldiers dislocated. The Pentagon has condemned on Wednesday the missile attacke over the Kandahar airfield, even if it did not end up with victims. The Air Base from Kandahar is being guarded by Romanian soldiers.

Romania’s defence and security

  • Elbit wants to move the entire Hermes drones production in Romania. Components for this unmanned aircrafts, Hermes 450, are already being created in Bacau. Elbit already has four manufactures with 700 employees in Romania and has proposed MoND the acquisition of this product. Romania has a 300 million euro budget to acquire seven unmanned systems.
  • The European Prosecutor’s Office starts working. Laura Codruta Kovesi has announced that the European Prosecutor’s Office, a new body to fight criminalities within the EU’s budget, will start its work on first of June, says a press release from Wednesday, quoted by Agerpress.
  • The digitalization is having a slow start in Romania. Romanians will hardly give up paper files until 2026. The Minister of Digitalization, Ciprian Teleman, said on Digi24 that this will be made gradually and fewer institutions will ask for files.
  • Huge loan for Romania. The minister of Finances has borrowed 3.5 billion euro from foreign markets, in the first Eurobond exist this year, says Mediafax. The funding is structured on two phases, one of 12 years and another one of 20 years. This is the biggest loan so far from foreign markets.
