Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 54.000 people got vaccinated (more than 31.000 with both doses). The total number of people who got the first dose of the vaccine is 2.1 million, 1,2 of them getting both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 5.231 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 196 deaths and in ICU there are now 1.466 people hospitalized.
  • Dan Barna admits the possibility of having a vaccination passport. „The discussion is on proving that you are not a danger for the society anymore. (…) Beyond the decisions Romania will make, if Europe will get to use such a passport, if it will be used by the European countries, then Romania will follow that path as well”, said Dan Barna, on Tuesday evening, at Digi24.

Global political and military events

  • Amnesty International: The Russian authorities are slowly killing Navalny. The Russian opponent Aleksey Navalny is being held in improper conditions which could slowly kill him, said, on Wednesday, the international non-governmental organization for the human rights, Amnesty International, says Agerpress.
  • Navalny’s doctors, arrested after asking for his transfer to a hospital. Many supporters of Aleksey Navalny were arrested in front of the prison in Pokrov, 100km away from Moscow, where the Russian dissident is being held. Among those who were detained are also six doctors, including the personal doctor of Navalny, Anastasia Vasilieva. The doctors who came to Pokrov wanted more information about the health condition of Kremlin’s opponent, especially after he said he had back and legs pain, says Mediafax.
  • Pentagon’s chief is visiting Israel. The US Defence Secretary, Lloyd Austin, will visit Israel next week, where he will meet prime-minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his counterpart, Benny Gantz, said the Axios news agency on Tuesday, quoted by Agerpress.
  • Taiwan, military drill on a computer to simulate an invasion from China. The Taiwan Armed Forces will develop an eight day drill, starting with April 23th, to simulate an invasion of the Chinese army, said the Defence Minister, according to AP.
  • An Iranian military ship, attacked by Israel. The Iranian military ship Saviz was attacked, probably with a mine, in the Red Sea, by Israel, according to a NYT report. The incident took place on Tuesday, during the Vienna discussions on the Iranian nuclear agreement. There is no information about the victims. The two countries accused each other of attacking commercial ships in the past, but it is the first time when the attack is targeting a military ship.

Romania’s defence and security

  • Debate on the environment. President Klaus Iohannis is participating on Wednesday at an event on “Climate change, the relation human-nature and public health”, organized on the occasion of the International Day of Health, at Cotroceni Palace, by the Presidential Administration and Romania’s Office from WHO.
  • Bogdan Aurescu is visiting Italy. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Bogdan Aurescu, is going on an official visit in Italy, as he was invited by his counterpart, Luigi di Maio, where he will meet the president of the Senate, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati. The Romanian minister will discuss about the cooperation in Europe and the Romanian community from Italy.
  • The International Day of Health. In 1948, on the occasion of the first global meeting dedicated to health and hosted by the WHO, it was decided the celebration of the International Day of Health.
