Coronavirus and vaccines

  • Vaccination in Romania: In the last 24 hours, more than 80.000 people got vaccinated (more than 30.000 with both doses). Totally, more than 2.4 million people got the vaccine, with more than 1.5 million people getting both doses.
  • Coronavirus in Romania: In the last 24 hours, there were recorded 3.852 new SARS CoV-2 cases, 195 deaths and in ICU there are now 1.518 people hospitalized.
  • The vaccination platforms got an upgrade. Now, one can see the position on the waiting list and the vaccination capacity, says rovaccinare.ro. Currently, there are 97.000 free positions for the vaccination.

Global political and military events

  • Spain has its first submarine locally produced, the S-81 Isaac Peral. After a ceremony, this submarine will be launched for tests, says the Armed Forces’ newspaper.
  • Poland is expelling Russian diplomats. Following the US’s announcement of a series of financial sanctions against Russia and the expulsion of ten Russian diplomats, as a response to a series of cyber attacks and the interferences in the 2020 presidential elections, attributed to Moscow, Poland has also expelled three Russian diplomats, as a solidarity sign, says Agerpress.
  • Minimum to medium risk of a Russian intervention in Ukraine. The risk of an invasion by the Russian military in Ukraine, in the following weeks, is minimum to medium, said, on Thursday, the US general Tod Wolters, the USEUCOM chief. He explained that, after the following weeks, the risk assessment will depend on a series of factors, but, considering the current trajectory and positioning of the Russian troops, the probability is will be lowered.
  • The Japan’s prime-minister is the first leader who is visiting the White House during the new administration. Today, president Joseph Biden will receive Japan’s prime-minister, Yoshihide Suga, showing the essential role of this country in fighting China’s aggressiveness in the Indo-Pacific region, says AP. The discussions about the 5G development are, also, on the agenda of the two leaders.

Romania’s security and defence

  • Extended political crisis in Romania. The co-president of URS PLUS, Dacian Ciolos, wrote in a message published on Facebook, on Thursday, that he had a phone conversation with Florin Citu about Vlad Voiculescu’s dismissal, wherein the prime-minister could not explain the gesture and the real reasons for making that decision. Also, the liberals do not approve the change made by the prime-minister and are expecting the appointment of a new Minister of Health by the USR PLUR party.
