General (ret.) Gheroghe Savu has stated, on Thursday, that the threats against Romania’s national security are also the ones against the European Union, but with different tendencies.

According to Savu, the biggest threat for Romania is the Eastern one- mentioning, among others, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, in 2014, when Crimea was annexed- and, in this context, says Gheorghe Savu, the Eastern threats can no longer be the same for the states which have, for example, a border with the Atlantic Ocean.

According to Savu, NATO and the European Union are seeing the other threats against security similarly, such as the hybrid war or cyber-attacks.

“When talking about the emergent threats, we are referring to cyber-attacks and the hybrid war, where there were taken many collaboration and cooperation measures” (within NATO and the European Union)”- has stated General Gheorghe Savu, former director of the National Intelligence Directive, across the Conference “The National Security Policy, from strategic thinking to the defence institutions”, organized by the Defence and Security Monitor.

General (ret.) Gheorghe Savu also stated that Romania could not come with an update security strategy.

Gheroghe Savu is former director of the Defence’s Intelligence Directive and former chief of the military representatives to NATO and EU.

The Defence and Security Monitor organized, on Thursday, at the Marriott Hotel in Bucharest, the Conference on “The national security policy, from strategic thinking to the security and defence institutions”, a debate forum with important guests from Romania and abroad. Among the topics approached at the event, there were the “the fundamental national interests and the threats against the national security”, “Romania’s capacity to provide national security” and the “national security concept of Romania” in an international context.

Starting from the idea that “national security is nation’s most important value”, the participants at the conference, among them also dr. Thomas-Durell Young, the Israeli General (r) Itai Brun, the Polish General (r) Jaroslaw Strozyk, will analyze the significances of the national security concept within the transformations of the international system, especially in the Euro-Atlantic space.

Conference’s objectives are related to understanding the importance of national defence and security by Romania’s citizens, from understanding the role of the institutions to the transparency of using state funds, to involving citizens in the strategic decisions and identifying nation’s objectives and solutions of the future National Defence Strategy.
